March 26: St. Louis Science Center

This was the first cake that we, as a family, came across. Alex had seen the one at Ft. Zumwalt Park and others on her field trip and on bus rides for school and I had seen them in pictures that friends had taken, but this was the first cake I actually saw live. So this began our adventure. I had not yet looked up the website and learned about the whole collection and where they all were so it was exciting to stumble across one on our trip to the Science Center

We visited the center during Spring Break. The schedule for Spring Break was rather full of activities for a week off of school and this was the only day we really had free to go explore. Our original plan was to go to the Botanical Gardens or the zoo, but the weather wasn't cooperating, so we decided to go see the Imax film about Jerusalem. It was very interesting. We took a virtual  tour of the holy city from the perspective of three young women from the different sections of town, Jewish, Christian Muslim. It was well done, though it was one of the more dizzying IMax films.

While we were there, I talked the kids into visiting the Life Science Lab. I have always wanted to go do this, but it has never worked out on previous visits. The kids are getting a bit old for it now, but they humored me because I had really wanted to do this for so long. I think they ended up enjoying it. :-) Alex and Jessica chose the "Be a Crime Scene Investigator" activity, a forensics experiment in which they had to find the suspect by studying the chemical reactions of various marker inks. Jacob chose to do an experiment with DNA.

Being a science buff, this is one of my favorite cakes. :-)
