April 21: Washington University Hospital Complex

The kids weren't excited about this leg of the trip. But I really wanted to find these cakes. I spent my first year of college at StLCoP, St. Louis College of Pharmacy and I wanted to get a picture of that cake for old time's sake and to explore the area that has changed so much in the 25 years since I lived there. We ended up parking in the parking garage and walking to most of them. But, before we got there, we took a quick detour to the Basilica.

First stop in the medical complex had to be StLCoP. The kids wouldn't let me explore the campus. But we did get a picture at the cake.

Next we found the Children's Hospital Cake and someone was kind enough to take a picture of all of us. He said he had been doing that a lot.

The hardest hunt of the day turned out to be the Central Institute for the Deaf. We looked all around the hospital side of the building and down the street along the school and couldn't find it. We were practicing our sign language in case we had to ask for help. Though I knew that wouldn't really be necessary as back in the day, a student from this school was in before school care in my home day care and I  knew they emphasize lip reading rather than sign language. But it was fun to challenger ourselves to use our signing knowledge to formulate the question. Finally, we cut around back and found it in a nice little garden.

On the way back, I had to take some pictures of my old school.

I took this picture of the Barnes and Noble across the walk way from the school. Back in the day, we had a small campus bookstore. We didn't have any big fancy book store with a Starbucks inside! No, in this spot was an emergency room entrance with sirens blaring at all hours of the day. The are is definitely changed and improved since I went to school there. One of the new additions is the big Siteman Cancer Center building where my doctor has offices.

 Here the kids grudgingly stop for one last nostaligic picture for mom.  You can just see the huge parking garage where our car is parked. When I went to school there, that space was occupied by an elementary school and a small parking lot for the StLCop students.

April 21: The Loop

After we left Forest Park, we headed over to The Loop on Delmar for lunch and more cakes.

But first we got an unexpected addition to our list of cakes. As we were heading toward Delmar, we were passed by an ambulance. We happened to be right in front of the Chase Park Plaza so as we pulled out of the way, we pulled in for another cake.

We had a delicious lunch at Cheese-ology. A wonderful little gourment Mac and Cheese restaraunt that is the inspiration of a chemist foody. They  have many different varieties of mac and cheese, including gluten free, vegetarian and vegan. I think we ordered a couple of Philly Cheese, a gluten free classic and I enjoyed a very yummy Mediterranean.

After lunch, we headed out and found the many cakes along Delmar.

We had a bit of fun around the University City Lion Gate.

The cake at the lions is a tribute to the famous St. Louis question. "Where did you go to highschool?" I of course had to add mine.

We thought the Blueberry Hill cake was pretty cool with all its cultural icons painted on it.

There are a few more cakes on Delmar, but this was as far as we wanted to walk that day. So we headed back and hopped in the car to get some around the hospital complex. I will add those on another post.

April 21: Forest Park

April 21 found us with a day off school and we decided to spend it finding as many cakes as we could in the Forest Park and Delmar areas. Our circle took us to 21 cakes that day.

St. Louis Zoo

We arrived at the zoo just in time to get free parking and free entrance into Caribbean Cove. Alex wanted a chance to pet the sting rays and sharks. 

After visiting the sting rays, we headed up the hill to the Primate House. Here we found some sleeping lemurs. 

Then we headed up to Red Rocks to check out the cats.
It was a misty day and the cats were fairly active. The tiger was wandering all over his area.

We didn't stay long at the zoo as it was raining and we wanted to be sure we had time to see some more cakes before the predicted storms.  After we left the zoo, we circled the park and found all the cakes we knew about at the time.

This cake has since been moved to Forest Park Forever. We will have to go back and take a picture of the cake that is now at the History Museum.

It had been a long, cold and snowy winter and we enjoyed taking pictures of the gorgeous blooms we found along the way.

As we approached the World's Fair Pavilion, we came about a slew of  emergency equipment including K9 dogs and a HazMat vehicle. Hmmm, very curious. We never did find out what they were up to!

After the skating rink, eveyone was quite hungry, so we decided to pass up the nearby hospital complex cakes and take a lunch break before hunting more cakes. We will cover those in another post.
