October 11: Celebrating my birthday with Webster/Kirkwood Cakes

Saturday was my birthday and what better way to celebrate than to go find some birthday cakes!? And where better to explore than the town I grew up in? We headed down to the Webster and Kirkwood area for cakes. I love my home town of Webster Groves and it was so fun to spend the day there. I always get so nostalgic when I go back. I also always marvel at how different everything is!

On our way down to Kirkwood, we stopped at the Museum of Transportation. We discovered that they have added on to the complex as we stumbled into the new area first and couldn't find the cake. A helpful museum guide pointed us in the right direction. But, before we headed up the hill, we took a few pictures.

The caboose was fun to explore.

Alex and I had fun with the air horn

The Cake

We got to ring the bell on the porch. This is like the bell that Webster and Kirkwood pass back and forth as the Turkey Day football game prize.

Stopped to take some pictures of the flowers around the visitor's center porch.

Our name, spelled wrong. A lot of people in St. Louis try to spell our name this way, because this is what they see!

After the Transportation museum, we headed down to the Magic House. Man, that place has expanded like crazy over the years! When I was a kid, it was just one big Victorian style house. When my kids were little, it had expanded toward the back, adding lots more attractions. When we arrived yesterday, we discovered that they had added even more on to the side. The museum almost completely fills the lot  now! Alex and I want to find some small children so we can go check out the new exhibits.

Statue fun:

Next stop: Kirkwood Amtrack Station. I caught the train from this station as a teen to go visit a friend in Kansas City. Right before I got married, my father took me out for a father/daughter dinner at a French restaurant across the street.

I remember getting the most delicious cherry frozen  custard at the little custard shop.

We walked across the street to the Kirkwood Farmers market and drooled over all the pumpkiny goodness and fall delights! Alex treated us to a yummy chocolate zucchini bread!

We need to go back when we have time to explore some of the fun looking shops!

We left Kirkwood and headed to Webster Groves. We have tried twice before to find the Loretta Hilton and Webster U cakes. We hadn't been able to find them, partly because the University has expanded and changed so much, I wasn't sure where to look and partly because the area has always been so busy and crowded when we get there and so we gave up. We were glad that the theater cake was finally moved to an outside location that was easier to get to, but it still took a bit of poking around to find it. But, third time was a charm and we finally nabbed these WG cakes! We picked up three with one stop:

Opera Theater of St. Louis

Webster University

Celebrating three October birthdays!

A cool tree trunk we found along the walk.

Alex loves to imitate sculptures that we find in our explorations.

Looks like Webster is celebrating a birthday too!

We stopped for lunch at McDonalds and I ran into some friends who live in the house across the street from where I grew up. The McDonalds is all modernized and nothing like it was when I lived there! They also had pretty flowers on the tables.

After lunch, we tried for a photo op at my WGHS, but there were, surprisingly, a lot of students about, so we opted out and headed for the next cake.

Kenrick Seminary

When I was a teen, the Seminary sold off a bunch of land. One of the businesses that went on that land was Kenrick Cinema. My brother and I spent many a summer weekend seeing movies there. That was back when movies were good and there was always something worth watching each week. I  I knew that the theater had closed, but I was sad to find this pile of rubble standing where I have so many good memories. Apparently it is going to be a Walmart.

Our next stop was Sappington House.

Sappington House was going to be our last stop, but we decided that since Laurmeier Park was on the way home, we should stop by there. This is always a fun place to explore!

Oh yeah, there's a cake there too! :-)

I told them to look shocked. I meant electrical. Alex thought I meant surprised.

We headed home to relax a bit and then get ready for our next adventure. Then we headed to my parents for a wonderful birthday dinner, opened a few presents and then headed to Illinois for another cake and a movie. Kenrick Theater may be gone, but Belleville still has a Drive in Movie! My brother joined us for this adventure. After finding a spot to park, we walked around and grabbed a picture in the dark and then walked back and settled in with chairs, blankets, candy and popcorn to watch Ghostbusters.

It was a great birthday!

  1. Ghostbusters? The old one? We are planning a trip to the drive-in theater here in Ocala when 1) it is cooler and 2) the time changes so the movies will start a little earlier. They still show 2 current movies back-to-back, so starting earlier would be good! :) Haven't been to the transportation museum since bk (before kids) or the Magic House since Landon and Gerren were tiny (pre-girls). The other places were new to me. Our trips to St. Louis in the past decade have been either short or taken up only by trips to the zoo or the arch (things a very little one would like). We are definitely expanding our horizons next time!!!

  2. Yep. The old Ghosbusters. It was "slasher weekend" or some such. 2 family friendly movies on screen 1, two hard core horror movies on screen 2 and then Rocky Horror Picture show for a midnight showing on screen 1. Here, there are always double features on both screens, starting at 8 or whenever it gets dark. 8 at the earliest. I *think* this might have been the last weekend for Skyview this year.

  3. Ah! I forgot about the two screens. We only have one screen here, but I guess it's pretty good to have a drive-in at all. :)
